Violet

Once Sebastian closes the door the attic is completely silent. It’s not a tiny room like I expected when he said safe room. It’s more like the studio apartment I’ve been living in. It’s all open, kitchenette, bedroom, standup shower in a corner, the door next to that must be the toilet.

I see two more doors with a small couch between them with a small window above it. As roomy as it is I feel claustrophobic, itchy in my own body and anxiety is beat at my back. I hate not knowing what is happening.

The coffee table in front of the couch has a laptop on it and phone. I sit and open the computer hoping to get a visual of what is going on outside.

I start chewing my thumbnail. It’s a nervous habit I normally only have before performances. I’m worried the man I love is going to get himself killed protecting me, and I wouldn’t be able to tell him. So, I guess this is the biggest performance of my life.

The screen turns on and the Retina display scans my face. Aria’s voice fills the room and scares the shit out of me.

“Welcome Violet. Safe room protocols are active and the exit door can only be opened by your command.”

That alleviates some of my worries. Being trapped up here to die alone was not an appealing thought. The icons on the screen are pretty basic. A camera, microphone, maps and weather apps are lined up on the right side.

I click on the camera and the screen splits into multiple views of the house. I can see inside and out, the boxes blinking when it detects any movement.

I watch Sebastian standing in the living room looking at the opposite wall but I don’t have that view to see what he’s paying attention too.

I click the microphone and the sound system turns on but it’s not Sebastian I can hear. The words are foreign, rapid and there is a shit ton of background noise.

I hear at least three different voices, all men but not all speaking English. All the screen movement is giving me a headache and I’m about to shut the laptop when I hear Sebastians voice start to speak.

“This is private property and trespassers will be shot. Not sure what you boys want but you picked the wrong fucking house. You got two minutes to get the fuck off my land and that started ninety seconds ago.”

His aggressive and commanding tone has me squeezing my legs together. I need to get my hormones in check. Now is not the time to be thinking about how good his dick is.

I hear Aria counting down from thirty and notice a man with a can of gasoline in the top corner box. He throws it at one of the windows and follows that up by shooting at it. The bushes underneath catch fire instantly.

“Structural fire detected. Countermeasures activated.” The door to my left swings open, scaring the shit out of me and I scramble back almost falling.
